This July we decided to forgo our usual camp and execute 2 #JUMPIN sessions. We did a repeat of We're Going on a Bear Hunt and decided to do a favourite of mine The Giving Tree! We're Going on a Bear Hunt - Take 2Children love this story! When we pull back the curtains and say let's walk through the story everyone is excited to go on a bear hunt! Even moms and dads. The Giving TreeWe did things a little differently. Instead of us doing a #jumpin to the story we read the book #inthestory under our Giving Tree. The parents then discussed with their children what the tree gave to the boy and what they could give to someone they love that doesn't cost money. Hugs and kisses were the obvious choices but some of my little readers said "clean up my toys" "behave" "help cook". What a wonderful bonding experience for the family.

Today we explored The Gruffalo's Child. The Gruffalo's Child went on a mission to find the BIG BAD MOUSE! She finally finds a mouse, not the big bad one but a tiny cute one, and she decides it's dinner time but this mouse is far too clever to become dinner he decides to use SCIENCE! He casts a shadow of himself and suddenly he becomes THE BIG BAD MOUSE! Our craft demonstrated the use of shadows and how we can make big and small shadows. The children and parents loved this shadow puppet theater and this was the perfect ending to a wonderful semester.
WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! Today we had another fantastic #JUMPIN session. This story by local author Stacey Alphonso-Mills takes readers on a journey through the Nariva Swamp exploring the way we mistreat the environment and how we can reverse this destruction. Thank you to Shanice Riberio for sewing the manatee, thanks to Aunty Christianna for the great props especially the boat and to the awesome Chelsea Sanatan for her assistance with the sessions. So many people coming together to create this experience. Today we did our first #jumpin session for the term. Amazing fun with Rapunzel!
"Rapunzel Rapunzel let down your hair! You know some of my little ones tried to climb her hair right! These sessions are so interactive and encourage learning in such a fun and creative way! WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! Today we did a JUMPIN of The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson.
We don't need to show the children the pictures because when we pull back the curtain WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! Thanks to my team Christianna Lucky for AMAZING prop work and Chelsea Sanatan for the awesome pictures. Check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for more pictures and stories from today's session. Today was just awesome ! I secretly feared that the children would not be as excited as they usually are, because there were no huge props for them to hide and play in.
But as usualy all my fears were put to rest the minute I pulled back the curtains! It was quite heart warming to see them interact with our leather back turtle and her hatchlings. They were gentle and amazed as though it were the real thing! They ALL enjoyed Ready. Set... Hatch! and of course...they met the author Jeunanne Alkins. What an AMAZING DAY! WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! Check out some special moments in the pictures below and also our posts on Instagram. If you could #JUMPIN to Hansel and Gretel what would you want to explore? Today the children explored the gingerbread house, the cage that Hansel was locked in and the brick oven where the wicked witch met her demise.
As a child I dreamt of days like this. I wished I could walk through stories and it was this dream that inspired these sessions. WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! Here are a few pictures. Today we did 2 sessions of Jack and the Beanstalk! We had magic beans, a bean stalk, a castle in the clouds, a golden harp, an origami goose and a golden egg! Whew propping this one wasn't easy but Aunty Christiana out did herself.
Take a look at some of the fun! WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! I am always very excited to execute these 3 to 5 years Parent and Me sessions. For me it brings to life everything I desire The Reading Garden to be! We read the story, we "jump in"using props so the children can walk through the story and then we build a storyboard. The joy I see on the faces of both the children and parents lights up my heart. I chose to tell the original version of the story. Yes, the one where two of the pigs are eaten and the wolf tries to lure the third pig out of the house in order to have him as a meal. The third pig is too smart and he avoids the wolf every time. This angers the wolf and he decides to climb down the chimney where he falls into a pot of boiling water and he eaten, by the third little pig, for supper. Some of the children looked really confused! WHAT??! They get eaten? The wolf asks the third pig to go apple picking? They had never heard these things but the elements that remained the same captivated them throughout the session. They say a picture speaks a thousand words. I am grateful to Joanna De Silva for capturing these beautiful pictures of our very exciting Three Little Pigs event! WE WILL BRING THE BOOK BACK! What an exciting and fulfilling experience conducting the pilot 3 to 5 years Parent and Me session, We're Going on a Bear Hunt!
When I finally made the decision to launch this new program I knew I had to start with my son's favourite story. My entire family has been on a bear hunt and when a child can tell a story verbatim with great enthusiasm each time you KNOW that the book is a winner. The session started off with a very short song which gave all the children an opportunity to introduce themselves. We then moved into the storytelling. I LOVE dramatic reading and this story completely lends itself to it, especially at the end when the children see the bear. My little readers soon picked up on the rhythm of the book. "We can't go over it. We can't go under it. We have to go through it!" After all the smiles and giggles during story time, from both parents and children, we went straight into my favourite part of the session JUMP IN! JUMP IN is The Reading Garden's opportunity to show off how WE BRING BOOKS TO LIFE! The children were able to walk through the pages of the book and do exactly what the character did in the story. OH! The excitement of walking through the grass, experiencing a whirling snowstorm and of course seeing the bear in the cave. A parent was able to capture the children running from the bear back through all the elements in the story. That moment warmed my heart. It was truly a joy to be able light up the children's senses. After JUMP IN the children teamed up with their parents to create a story board so they would never forget the bear hunt! It was great to see the children get to relive the story again and the product of their hard work was simply amazing. These sessions will formally start in September 2017. We want you to join us as we continue to excite and amaze you and your little ones as we BRING THE BOOK BACK! Here are some of the moments that were captured by the parents. I hope to post video very soon...I'm having technical difficulties! :) Don't miss out! Add your name to our email contact list to receive notifications about future events! Sign UP! |
