Before a child can truly immerse themselves in the world of reading, they need to understand how print works. That's where print awareness begins.
This week's free printable spotlight is all about building that early awareness. I designed this "Ready to Read!" pack for preschoolers who are just starting to understand how books and letters work. It is just a starter/taste of some worksheets that help with print awareness and book awareness. This packet is not comprehensive, but it is intended to provide a sample of some worksheets that will help your child on their literacy journey.
Inside the pack, you will find:
A Parts of a Book worksheet to help children understand what a cover, title, and pages are.
A Beginning Sounds activity that introduces the connection between letters and their sounds.
A fun worksheet on Words that start with H—because we always start small and build big!

A Little Story from Me
When I was a child, I loved telling tall tales; wild, little stories that made my aunt laugh and shake her head. Like the day, and slid down San Fernando Hill on a box (readers from Trinidad would understand how wild one's imagination has to be to tell this story with a straight face). One day, to my absolute wonder, my Aunt made a book out of all my tall tales. She wrote my stories by hand in a simple copybook!
Someone I loved turned my stories into something tangible. Something that was mine. A memory for a lifetime, that made me feel cherished and seen. That moment sparked something, not just a love of stories, but a belief that my voice mattered. I have lost the book, but the feeling and my passion for storytelling and nurturing imagination have remained a part of me.
That, my readers, is the power of reading and writing at home. It is not just about skills, it's about connection and creativity.
Challenge: Create a Book with your child.
Don't get overwhelmed. Here is your checklist:
A cover with:
A Book title
Author's Name
Illustration
Illustrator's name
A story:
The Beginning- introducing characters and setting the scene
The Middle - all the "tea"
The End - wrap it up in a memorable way
Make it silly or sweet, long or short -MAKE IT YOURS.
BONUS: If you're unsure of where to start with design, I have included a few pages in the package to help. Alternatively, you can follow the late great Aunty Nova's example and buy a copybook, then get to work on creating memories with your little one.
