How to Build a Reading Routine (Without the Fuss)

Let's be honest, keeping up with a "routine" can feel like just one more thing on the to-do list. Especially when you are juggling work, dinner, school pickups, and maybe even a bit of "me" time (as a parent, this can be hard to find). But when it comes to reading with your child, it doesn't have to be perfect or polished.

In fact, the most meaningful reading routines are the simplest ones.

You should not build your reading routine on pressure; focus on presence.

Here is how to build a reading routine that works and lasts:

1. Anchor it to something you already do.

After breakfast. Before bedtime. Right after bath. Choose a moment that already exists in your day and attach your reading time to it. It removes the decision-making and makes it feel natural.

2. Keep books visible.

Out of sight, out of mind is an overused phrase. Right? Or is it? Try placing a small basket of books where your child spends most of their time, such as on the floor, by their bed, or even in the car. Accessibility builds habit.

3. Let your child choose. LET YOUR CHILD CHOOSE!

Children are more likely to engage with books they pick. Whether it's the same story on repeat or something you think is completely silly, follow their lead. Never criticise their choice! At times, you may need to guide gently, but the goal of a reading routine is connection, not curriculum.

4. Short or Long Sessions.

Even five minutes of shared reading a day is powerful. One story. One page. One moment of closeness. It all adds up. Fifteen minutes should be the goal, but any amount of time is time well spent.

5. Focus on the connection.

A blanket, a cuddle and a quiet space. Reading isn't just an activity. It's a feeling. When children associate books with warmth and love, they are more likely to return to them again and again.

Reading routines are not about rules. Reading routines are about rhythm.

When reading becomes a gentle part of your child's everyday life, it becomes a lifelong companion. So don't overthink it. Please keep it simple and joyful. You're not just creating a habit, you're planting a memory.
